Nursing is prevention, not just cure

Conclusion

📌 KEY PRINCIPLE: PREVENTION IN SURGICAL NURSING

In surgical wards, one duty of every nurse certainly is prevention. Fever, hospital gangrene, pyoemia may supervene. The surgical nurse must ever be on watch against want of cleanliness, foul air, want of light, and of warmth.

📋 SANITARY NURSING VS. HANDICRAFT

Sanitary nursing (environmental) is the subject of these notes — but handicraft nursing (practical skills) is not to be undervalued.

A patient may bleed to death in a sanitary palace. Another may die of bed-sores because nurse doesn't know how to change him, while he has every requisite of air, light, quiet.

Three reasons handicraft not treated:

  1. These notes are not a manual for nursing
  2. Practical nursing can only be learnt in hospital wards
  3. While thousands die of foul air who have perfect handicraft nursing, the converse is comparatively rare

👶 CHILDREN: GREATER SUSCEPTIBILITY

Children are much more susceptible than grown people to all noxious influences. They are affected by the same things, but much more quickly and seriously:

  • Want of fresh air
  • Want of proper warmth
  • Want of cleanliness (house, clothes, bedding, body)
  • Startling noises
  • Improper food or want of punctuality
  • Dulness and want of light
  • Too much or too little covering

🌙 MOST SERIOUS: FOUL AIR AT NIGHT

That which above all is known to injure children seriously is foul air, and most seriously at night. Keeping the rooms where they sleep tight shut up is destruction to them.

If the child's breathing be disordered by disease, a few hours of such foul air may endanger its life, even where no inconvenience is felt by grown-ups in the same room.

📊 IMPORTANT QUOTATION

"In the great majority of instances, when death suddenly befalls the infant or young child, it is an accident; it is not a necessary result of any disease from which it is suffering." — Lecture on Sudden Death in Infancy and Childhood

This is almost equally true for all ages.

⭐ FINAL SUMMARY

"The art of nursing, as now practised, seems to be expressly constituted to unmake what God had made disease to be, viz., a reparative process. Nursing ought to assist the reparative process."

💡 Memory Tip: Remember Nightingale's legacy as "PREVENT"Protect from foul air, Remember children are vulnerable, Environment first, Ventilate always, Educate nurses in observation, Nursing assists nature, Teach prevention above all.
